Flavoured Salts

Flavoured Salts

An easy and inexpensive way to fancy up your cooking and use up all the bits and bobs you have in the pantry is to make your own flavoured salts. I suppose this isn’t really a recipe, so much as suggestions of flavours you can mix in to your salt. Either way, I think it is a good idea.

This would also make a lovely gift packaged up in a pretty little bottle. Everyone has enough chocolate at Easter, why not give something a little different to break up the monotony. I think a nice flavoured salt to go on your Easter fish or sprinkled on soft boiled eggs would be a well received gift. I know I would like it.

My tip is to use a coarse salt, like rock salt, kosher, or maldon. And if you store your flavoured salts in an airtight container they will last for about 2 months. Some of your added flavours will need to be dried out, you can do this in an oven, a dehydrator or in a low heat frying pan. Just be careful to only just dry out your salt mix, not cook it.

I made two different flavours this week, the first is an Orange and Fennel Salt that I almost added some chilli to but decided at the last minute that I wouldn’t. The second is a lovely fresh Lime and Ginger Salt. My house smelled amazing after making these and I am really looking forward to using them. I’m sure if you keep an eye on my Instagram feed you will probably see them pop up.
