Happiness around your Home

Happiness

Home is our safe haven, where we all feel safe, comfortable and where we feel happy. But we can all get in a rut, especially if you are home a lot, be it working from home or a stay at home parent or even just on weekends. Don’t let it get on top of you. Here are some tips for creating happiness around your home that are quick, easy but highly effective.

Do it now if it takes less than 5 minutes

Try not to put things off because you don’t have time or can’t be bothered. If something is going to take less than five minutes to do – do it now, don’t put it off until later. If you procrastinate on it, it is highly likely it will never get done and it will annoy you like crazy every time you see that niggling task there. Put your shoes away, pick up that toy, iron tomorrows shirt as well, wipe down the entire kitchen counter, fill up the toilet roll holder, do 20 sit-ups (or whatever), reply to that email/text. Doing it now will make you happier because you no longer have to worry about it and the act of mentally crossing something off your list is empowering and motivating.

Make your Bed

It makes the whole room look tidy and its less inviting to snuggle back in.

Display things that make you Happy

Put your sentimental things on display, not just the pretty stuff – trinkets from a holiday, photos anything that evokes a positive memory. A lot of the time this sort of stuff is just hiding away in the cupboards collecting dust, being forgotten. If it makes you happy, get it out.

Get rid of Clutter so every room looks Fresh

Getting rid of visual clutter not only makes cleaning easier but it gives you mental space.

Have a to do List that is Easy to get to

The act of crossing things off is so satisfying. If you don’t want a list, at least have an actionable item to do each day – don’t waste your day. And I am even guilty of writing a task on the list after I have done it just so I can cross it off and feel good.

Have a Grateful Book

Have a small notebook where you can write down one thing you are grateful for every day. Make it something different each day. And if you are strugggling to think of something for that day – get up and do something. Be active in making your happiness happen.

Say Hello

Contact a friend, call them, text, Facebook, write them a letter – whatever. Make contact and say hello and check in with them. But make it sincere, especially if you do it electronically.

Turn off the News

You will get through the day, even the week without watching the news. Too often it is all depressing, scary, sad irrelevant hyped up stories that do not effect your everyday existence. If something significant happens that does effect you, you will hear about it from your friends and family. If you are a news-a-holic find some way of quickly getting the headlines. Record the news so you can skip past stories, flick through the headlines on a news website, follow someone who gives a good synopsis of the news. It is information overload and clutters your mind with things you don’t need to worry about.

Start with these simple things that you can do around your home to make you happy and you will notice a difference immediately. What other small things do you do to create happiness around your home?
