Kids Apron Tutorial
I was cooking Carrot Cookies from the one handed cooks in the kitchen with the kids and we all had our aprons on and I thought I should share with you all how to make your very own itty bitty person sized apron for your special helper in the kitchen.
Children love to pretend to cook and play kitchen and it is adorable to watch them copy what you do. They enjoy it even more when they can dress the part with their very own apron. It can be hard to find them small enough for kids and they are so easy to make yourself. If you don’t know where to start, here is my kids apron tutorial that tries to make it a little easier for you.
If you want to be exact you can measure how tall your child is and make adjustments because you obviously don’t want the apron to be dragging on the floor and getting in the way. But don’t worry too much, the size is flexible and this apron will fit them for a few years.
What you Need:
- Fabrics – you can use whatever you have laying around or buy something special
- Buttons to decorate
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread if you are patient)
- Ribbon - optional
Step 1. Measure and Cut Fabric
Lay your fabric out flat and use some sewing chalk to draw the outline of your apron on the reverse side. I made mine 29cm wide across the bottom. 19cm up to the waist. 15Cm from waist to top edge which is 14cm wide. These are finished widths, remember when cutting your material to cut extra for the hemming.
I used a contrasting fabric for the pocket which measures 13cm wide by 10cm high.
Decide if you are using material or ribbon for your straps. Cut ribbon or material to the following lengths.
Waist straps – cut two 42cm long strips that are 6cm wide, once sewn the straps are about 2.5cm wide. I find this length fits around their waist and room to tie a bow.
Neck Straps – cut two 35cm long strips that are 4cm wide, once sewn the straps are about 1.5cm wide. Again, this length gives enough to tie a bow as well as room for the child to grow taller.
Step 2. Stitch Fabric Together
Simply turn back and hem the main section of your apron.
For each strap fold the fabric in half length-ways with the print on the inside and stitch up the length of it before turning right way in.
Hem the top and side edges of your pocket. Sew bottom edge of the pocket directly on to your apron so stitching is inside. Then stitch both sides onto the apron to finish the pocket.
Sew on each of the straps.
Step 3. Decorate
Decorate your apron with cute buttons, appliques, maybe even write their name across the front with a laundry marker – get creative and do whatever you like. Depending on the age of your child they may like to get involved and help decorate their own apron.
Step 4. Cook!
