Wanderlust 7 Wonders & Link Party

When you think about all of the places that there are to see in the world and ask someone, even if they aren’t a travel fiend, where they want to go, the mind drifts to certain wonders across the world, the 7 wonders. Do you think you could list the 7 wonders of the world?

Ancient SevenWondersOfTheWorld

We started out with the classic 7 wonders of the world:

  • Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  • Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
  • Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  • Colossus of Rhodes
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria

Unfortunately the only ancient wonder still around to see is Giza’s Great Pyramid. So a bunch of people decided to try and make a new list, the 7 wonders of the middle ages. There were many versions of this but most included:

  • Stonehenge
  • Colosseum
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
  • Great Wall of China
  • Porcelain Tower of Nanjing
  • Hagia Sophia
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa

Then in 2007 the New7Wonders Foundation in Switzerland announced their new list, as voted by more than 100 million voters, thus creating the New 7 Wonders of the World. This list is doable as a Wanderlust list.

  • Great Wall of China, China (7th Century BC)
  • Petra, Jordan (100 BC)
  • Christ the Redeemer, Brazil (1931)
  • Machu Picchu, Peru (AD 1450)
  • Chichen Itza, Mexico (AD 600)
  • Colosseum, Italy (AD 80)
  • Taj Mahal, India (AD 1648)
  • Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt (2560 BC) added as an honorary candidate because they essentially had a tantrum.

Runners up that missed out included the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Sydney Opera House, the Statue of Liberty in New York, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Acropolis of Athens in Greece, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, among many others.

The same organisation have also released a 7 Wonders Cities (Beirut, Doha, Durban, Havana, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz and Vigan ) and a 7 Wonders of Nature list (Amazon, Ha Long Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, PP Underground River, Table Mountain). Again, there are more versions of these lists and each differs hugely with barely any single destination being mentioned twice. Such is the wonderful world we live in!
