Wednesday Wanderlust Amsterdam

This week for Wednesday Wanderlust I am remembering the time I spent in Amsterdam. I have written about this city before but the first memories that come to mind are the incredibly beautiful canals, the haunting Anne Frank House and the endless tulip fields. The clear blue skies and cold weather we are having at the moment reminds me of those days and has me suffering Wanderlust Amsterdam.

  There are so many places that I say that about too - can’t believe I’ve never been there! Or similarly that I have hopped through the airport but never had the time to stop.

I loved Amsterdam, a city of contrasts. The magnificent art galleries, the “coffee” houses, the red light district, the beautiful canals, and the Anne Frank House that sits on a lovely street overlooking a pretty canal - so not what I expected.

Great minds think alike!

I’ve been to Amsterdam 5 times but am yet to visit the Anne Frank House (I know, sounds ridiculous!). Each time I have been there, for one reason or another I have not been able to get there. On our most recent trip there, we planned to go on our last day in The Netherlands but it was pouring with rain and we didn’t want to wait hours outside with the kids in the rain.
My biggest tip: pre book your tickets months in advance (something I didn’t find out until it was too late).

    Well, it is a tad far from Singapore. We’re waiting for the kids to grow a bit older before venturing to Europe. Or until an irresistible flight promotion comes along. Whichever happens first.

My sister said the same thing about the Anne Frank house - that it was haunting. She felt a presence (or a few) the whole time she was there. And tulips are my absolute favourites!

My father is Dutch, so Amsterdam has always been on my must see one day list. I believe we still have some family there but I’ve hardly kept in touch with that side of the family, so not sure if I would be comfortable looking them up. Would dearly love to start looking at doing a family tree.

  This is the perfect excuse to plan a trip to Amsterdam. And I find the dutch are so accommodating that you will be ‘part of the family’ in no time.

We haven’t been to Amsterdam yet. One of the many destinations on the list. We won’t even get there next Europe trip due to time limits sadly.

Makes we want to try and squeeze Amsterdam into our trip in December… nope, we just can’t add anywhere else. This will have to be top of the list for our third trip to Europe as there is only so much time.

We had a wonderful time in Amsterdam. I loved it all, but Anne Franks’ house was a highlight. I was also a big fan of the beer. After our weekend in the capital we headed to friends in The Hague which was a wonderful surprise, cool, calm and coastal - definitely worth a visit. I’d go back to Holland in a heartbeat!

Embarrassingly I’ve never actually been to Amsterdam, even though it’s less than an hour away on the plane! Shocker. I’ve been a bit put off by most people my age who visit for the more “recreational” elements, which aren’t for me. But there’s so much there to see that I would love! I need to get on it, I think!

Ooh yes, serious case of Wanderlust. I just bought booked my ticket last night to northern Europe - Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and I’m including 5 nights in Amsterdam. The count down is on!
