Harvest Cafe
In a not-so-secret place in the Byron Hinterland sits Harvest Cafe. Nestled in a small country-town called Newrybar, it is a contemporary restaurant serving fresh local organic produce in a 1900′s weatherboard cottage.
Behind the main cafe is a 99 year old bakery with a big wood-fired oven that they use to bake their own fresh loaves of bread.
Next door is a huge herb and veggie garden and if you time it right you can watch the chefs picking the produce ready to cook. They also have a 5 acre farm nearby.
And to top it all off, they have a deli where you can buy locally produced products, their fresh bread, cheese, meats and treats. It is hard to walk out empty handed (I didn’t!).
The food at the cafe is fresh, tasty and generous and importantly, their coffee is spot on. It was a hard choice but Miss 4 had a babycino and ricotta pancakes off the kids menu while I was defeated by the size of the continental selection.
The staff are all friendly as you would expect in the country but they have a professional city edge to themselves. It is reassuring to know that you can find great food, coffee and service pretty much anywhere you go in Australia, lucky for me this is not far from my parents place making a visit to Harvest a must on our holidays back home.
Across the road is a great antiques shop with drawer knobs, tins, furniture and an array of bits and bobs. I had great fun poking around in here and loved their sign out the front – ‘antiques made daily’ – it made me giggle.
